Novel Nutritional and Immunological Aspects in the Management of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity

Nutrition offers a unique lens through which to examine the challenges of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity, particularly as these conditions become more prevalent in our aging global population. While medical advances have led to healthier longevity, muscle degeneration remains a neglected area compared to other age-related concerns such as osteoporosis. The immune system plays a critical role in the maintenance of muscle health, and recent research has highlighted complex interactions between nutritional status, inflammation, and the progression of sarcopenia. Yet, many aspects of how diet-driven modulation of immune functions can prevent or mitigate muscle deterioration are not fully understood. Recent findings suggest that nutrients not only serve as building blocks for muscle tissue but also modulate immune responses that influence muscle regeneration and repair. However, the field urgently needs deeper insights into which nutrients or dietary patterns best support immune health and muscle preservation simultaneously, especially given the limited availability of effective pharmacological options. This Research Topic aims to synthesize current knowledge and novel discoveries on the interplay between nutrition, immunity, and the management of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. The main objective is to clarify how specific dietary components, immunonutrition, and overall nutritional status influence immune functions relevant to muscle health, and to identify intervention strategies that harness this relationship for improved prevention and treatment. Additionally, the goal encompasses the examination of molecular and clinical evidence, the evaluation of immunomodulatory nutrients, and the exploration of integrative approaches that combine dietary therapies with immune-targeted interventions. To gather further insights within the unique intersection of nutritional immunology, this Research Topic will be limited to exploring how dietary factors modulate immune pathways relevant to sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. Topics outside the scope of nutritional or immune interaction in muscle health will not be included. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Influence of immunonutrition (e.g., omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, amino acids) on muscle mass and immune function.• Role of low-grade chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of sarcopenia and the potential for dietary modulation.• Gut microbiota, immunity, and muscle health: nutritional perspectives.• Nutritional interventions shaping immune-mediated muscle regeneration and repair.• Interrelationships between malnutrition, immunosenescence, and sarcopenic obesity.• Population studies assessing immunonutritional biomarkers and risk profiles.• Molecular mechanisms linking dietary patterns, immune signaling, and muscle preservation.
