Nuclear Reactor Developments Across France

France holds a unique position in the global nuclear landscape, with one of the most extensive and technically mature nuclear power programs in the world. It operates one of the largest nuclear power fleets worldwide, has deep expertise in reactor design, and is heavily involved across the full fuel cycle. French institutions and companies, including major industrial groups and research organizations, export technology, engineering services, and regulatory know‑how, making France a key reference country for nuclear standards and innovation.This Research Topic aims to bring together interdisciplinary work that examines past, present, and emerging nuclear reactor developments across France, from first-generation designs to current innovations and future concepts.We invite contributions covering the following topics:• Evolution of the French nuclear fleetStudies of the industrial and technological choices that shaped reactor standardization, deployment strategies, and infrastructure development• Current reactor technologies and modernizationStudies on pressurized water reactors (PWRs), lifetime extension programs, safety upgrades, digitalization, and performance optimization of existing units• Advanced and next-generation reactorsResearch on European Pressurized Reactors (EPR/EPR2), small modular reactors (SMRs), fast reactors, and other innovative designs under development in France• Safety and risk assessmentAnalyses involving safety standards, probabilistic risk assessment, severe accident management, and lessons learned from international events• Integration with future energy systemsContributions that examine the role of nuclear reactors in a low-carbon, highly electrified French energy system, including sector coupling, grid integration with renewables, and system-level modeling.Manuscripts on the military applications of nuclear energy are not suitable for publication in this journal.
