Nutraceuticals, Functional Foods, and Supplements: Impact on Metabolic Health, Ageing, and Longevity

Interest is rapidly growing in the targeted use of nutraceuticals, functional foods, and dietary supplements to address the challenges of metabolic health decline and age-related conditions. These interventions—ranging from bioactive food ingredients to scientifically-formulated supplements—are gaining traction for their ability to influence metabolic pathways, modulate inflammation, and support cellular function in both clinical and everyday settings. Emerging data suggest these nutritional strategies may help prevent, delay, or even reverse key metabolic disturbances and chronic diseases commonly associated with aging, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular dysfunction. However, despite promising results, greater clarity is still needed around the consistency of benefits, the biological mechanisms at play, population-specific responses, and the long-term safety of regular use. This Research Topic aims to advance focused scientific understanding on how nutraceuticals, functional foods, and supplements can be strategically utilized to optimize metabolic health and support healthy ageing and longevity. The primary objective is to pinpoint effective dietary components and regimens that show clear benefits in metabolic disease management and the maintenance of healthspan. Contributions should strengthen the mechanistic, clinical, or translational evidence for these nutritional strategies and highlight practical applications, emerging technologies, or critical knowledge gaps in the field. We invite submissions on topics including, but not limited to: - Mechanistic studies on bioactive compounds for metabolic regulation and cellular ageing - Clinical or epidemiological research on supplements and functional foods for age-related metabolic conditions - Efficacy, safety, and long-term effects of specific nutraceuticals in metabolic health and longevity - Dietary strategies and interventions targeting improved biomarkers of ageing and metabolic resilience - Innovations in supplement formulation or functional food development for targeted metabolic outcomes - Approaches for evaluating or translating findings to practice and policy relevant to ageing and metabolic health.
