Nutrition, Oral Health, and Healthy Aging: Cohort, Frailty, and Sarcopenia Dataset

Nutrition and oral health are tightly intertwined elements in the pursuit of healthy aging, influencing dietary intake, physical performance, and systemic health outcomes. Over the last decades, large-scale longitudinal cohorts such as the Dunedin, SONIC, Tokyo Metropolitan, Kashiwa, Suita, and Pelotas 1982 studies have collected vast and diverse datasets combining oral examinations, dietary variety assessments, masticatory performance metrics, and measures of frailty and sarcopenia. Despite their potential, many of these datasets remain underutilized, often analyzed within narrow disciplinary boundaries that limit a holistic understanding of aging mechanisms. Moreover, the lack of standardized data sharing practices has restricted interoperability across studies, impeding reproducibility and the exploration of cross-domain interactions. The FAIR² (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) framework highlights the imperative to treat datasets as reusable scientific assets, especially in geriatric and oral health research, where integrated data can illuminate complex relationships across diet, function, and physiology. This Research Topic aims to foster innovation in data reuse and integration across geriatric cohorts examining nutrition, oral health, frailty, and sarcopenia. It seeks to encourage collaborative, cross-cohort, and multidisciplinary analyses that align with the FAIR² principles, promoting transparency, interoperability, and long-term data utility. Specific objectives include advancing methods for harmonizing heterogeneous datasets, exploring causal relationships between oral function and nutritional status in aging, and modeling trajectories of physical decline and resilience using combined cohort data. In doing so, the Research Topic will serve as a platform for both empirical research and methodologies that position data curation, open sharing, and reusability as core pillars of geroscience. To gather further insights into the integration of datasets linking oral health, nutrition, and frailty, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• FAIR²-driven standardization and curation of geriatric cohort data• Cross-cohort harmonization of measures of oral health, dietary intake, sarcopenia, and frailty• Advanced analytic methods for linking biological, behavioral, and nutritional data• Machine learning and data fusion techniques for predictive modeling in healthy aging• Development of open repositories and metadata frameworks for aging cohort data• Longitudinal assessment of oral and nutritional predictors of physical and cognitive resilience• Ethical, legal, and data governance frameworks for reusable health data in older populationsThis Research Topic welcomes dataset-heavy contributions, including FAIR² articles, original research articles, dataset descriptors, methods papers, data reports, systematic reviews, and perspective or policy papers focused on transparency and reusability in geriatric data science.
