Nutritional Strategies and Bioactive Compounds Shaping the Human Gut Microbiome

The modulation of the gut microbiome through diet has become one of the most rapidly evolving field in nutritional and biomedical science. The gut microbial ecosystem plays a central role in metabolism, immune regulation, and overall health. Recent findings reveal that dietary composition and specific bioactive compounds significantly shape microbial composition, metabolic activity, and host–microbe interactions. However, despite this progress, considerable gaps remain in understanding how particular natural compounds—such as dietary fibers and bioactive molecules including polyphenols, terpenes, and peptides —interact with distinct microbial enterotypes. Moreover, the mechanisms driving individualized responses to dietary interventions are still partially understood, necessitating further investigation into diet-microbiome-host dynamics. This Research Topic aims to advance current knowledge on how dietary strategies and natural bioactives can be leveraged to modulate the gut microbiota for improved health outcomes. It encourages the exploration of novel functional foods and fortified dietary products, personalized enterotype-targeted nutrition, and synergistic effects between nutrients and microbial metabolites. The goal is to foster a multidisciplinary dialogue between nutrition science, microbiology, and food biotechnology, while highlighting translational pathways from preclinical insights to human interventions. To gather further insights into how dietary innovations exert microbiota-modulating effects, we welcome original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews and all type of articles accepted by the journal addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Development and testing of novel dietary formulations for gut health improvemento Mechanistic studies on polyphenol–microbiota interactions and metabolite pathwayso Tailored nutritional interventions for enterotype-based precision nutrition o Functional assessment of bioactive compounds (e.g. polyphenols, terpenes, prebiotics, postbiotics)o Clinical and observational studies linking diet-induced microbiome changes to host physiological outcomes and biomarkers o Advances in in vitro and in vivo models to study diet–microbiome interactionso Integrative omics approaches to assess diet–microbiota–host relationshipso Interaction between diet, nutrients, microbiome and intestinal epithelial barrier Topic editors: Vania Patrone, Duygu Ağagündüz, Enzo Spisni Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81182/nutritional-strategies-and-bioactive-compounds-shaping-the-human-gut-microbiome
