Nutritional Strategies for Cancer Treatment Efficacy
Cancer, a leading cause of death globally, accounts for over 10 million fatalities each year. While traditional cancer treatments, primarily focusing on the disease’s characteristics such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, are well-established, they often overlook the role of the host's characteristics, especially nutrition. Nutrition exerts significant influence on immune function and inflammation and is closely associated with therapeutic outcomes in cancer patients. Current research indicates a potential connection between nutritional status and the effectiveness of cancer treatments; however, detailed intervention strategies and their effects and mechanisms have not been clearly defined. This Research Topic aims to bridge the existing knowledge gap on the role of nutrition in cancer therapy enhancement. It seeks to solidify understanding of how nutritional status affects cancer treatment outcomes, validate the benefits of nutritional management, investigate the mechanisms underlying the association between nutritional status and cancer control, and develop standardized protocols for nutritional intervention in cancer care settings. In this research topic, nutritional issues are expanded to encompass malnutrition, sarcopenia, cachexia, and other well-defined nutrition-related conditions. Nutritional assessments include not only the quantification of nutrient intake, body composition, and biochemical markers but also the functional evaluation of muscle strength and performance status. Nutritional interventions go beyond mere nutrient intake to incorporate drug modulation, physical exercise, and other relevant strategies. We invite submissions on all types of well-defined cancer treatments and their related outcomes. While clinical trials are preferred, we also welcome high-quality observational studies, reviews, and perspectives. To further explore this area, we encourage submissions relating to, but not limited to, the following themes:• The relationship between nutritional status and treatment outcomes in cancer care• The effectiveness of nutritional interventions in enhancing cancer treatment• The mechanisms linking nutritional status to cancer treatment efficacy• Methods and protocols for effective nutritional promotion in cancer patients.• Innovative methods for assessing and monitoring nutrition in cancer patients Topic editors: Peiyu Wang, Xiao Li, Yin Li Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79670/nutritional-strategies-for-cancer-treatment-efficacy
