Nutritional Strategies for Sarcopenia: Mechanisms, Mitochondrial Targets, and Translational Interventions

Aging-related muscle atrophy and weakness, known as sarcopenia, is a major contributor to physical disability, metabolic dysfunction, and reduced quality of life in older adults. This condition typically accelerates after midlife and is exacerbated by inactivity, chronic disease, and impaired metabolic regulation. A range of preventive and therapeutic strategies, including exercise, physical activity, and dietary supplementation, have been proposed to slow its development, among which nutritional interventions are particularly important for older adults with limited mobility. However, the mechanisms by which nutrition influences the onset and progression of sarcopenia remain poorly understood. In particular, disruptions in mitochondrial function, redox balance, and mitochondrial quantity and quality controls are central features of sarcopenic muscle and represent promising therapeutic targets. This Research Topic seeks recent original research and review articles that not only identify novel mechanistic pathways and therapeutic targets related to dietary strategies for sarcopenia, but also present new nutritional treatments, interventions, and management approaches for aging populations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Nutrient-mediated regulation of mitochondrial function and quality control. • Dietary modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation in aging muscle. • Protein, amino acids, and bioactive compounds in muscle maintenance and regeneration. • Microbiome–muscle interactions and metabolite signaling. • Precision nutrition approaches targeting sarcopenia heterogeneity. • Nutritional interventions in clinical and preclinical models of aging and disuse. We welcome studies utilizing cell, animal, and human models that provide mechanistic depth and/or translational potential. Contributions that identify novel therapeutic targets or intervention strategies are particularly encouraged.
