Nutritional Strategies to Enhance Resilience, Gut Health, and Product Quality in Terrestrial and Aquatic Animal Production Systems
Animal production systems are increasingly challenged by environmental stressors, health constraints, and the demand for high-quality, safe, and sustainable products. Nutritional strategies have emerged as key tools to enhance animal resilience, optimize physiological responses, and maintain productive efficiency across terrestrial and aquatic species. Advances in functional nutrition, including bioactive compounds, phytogenics, probiotics, organic minerals, prebiotics, and other feed additives, have demonstrated strong potential to modulate gut health, intestinal microbiota, immune competence, and metabolic efficiency. These nutritional interventions directly influence growth performance, feed efficiency, welfare, and the quality of animal-derived products such as meat, milk, eggs, and aquatic products. Understanding the mechanistic links between diet, intestinal functionality, microbiota-host interactions, and productive outcomes is essential to support resilient and sustainable animal production systems under modern farming conditions. The goal of this Research Topic is to compile and advance current knowledge on nutritional strategies that enhance resilience, health, performance, and product quality in animal production systems. This Topic aims to integrate mechanistic, physiological, and applied perspectives, highlighting how nutrition-driven modulation of gut health and intestinal microbiota contributes to improved adaptive capacity under biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Special emphasis will be given to poultry (broilers and laying hens), swine, fish, shrimp, and other relevant livestock and aquaculture species. Contributions should address how functional feeds and nutritional interventions influence productivity, robustness, immune balance, oxidative status, and the qualitative traits of animal-derived products. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, this Topic seeks to support the development of sustainable feeding strategies that improve efficiency, animal welfare, and the nutritional and technological quality of meat, milk, eggs, and aquatic products in diverse production environments. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, and short communications focusing on nutritional approaches that enhance resilience, gut health, performance, and product quality in terrestrial and aquatic animals. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: functional feed ingredients and additives; modulation of intestinal microbiota; gut integrity and immune-nutritional interactions; stress physiology and resilience biomarkers; links between nutrition, metabolism, and product quality (meat, milk, eggs, and aquatic products); and sustainable nutrition strategies across production systems. Studies may involve poultry, swine, ruminants, fish, shrimp, and other farmed species. Both experimental and field-based studies are encouraged, particularly those providing mechanistic insights and practical implications for modern animal production.
