Oil Spill Response and Petroleum Waste Management: Risk and Sustainable Solutions

The effective management of petroleum contamination remains a critical environmental challenge in marine, coastal, inland, and industrial environments. Beyond various oil spill incidents, increasing attention has also been received towards petroleum-contaminated environments, oily sludge, weathered residues, and secondary waste generated during oil spill and contaminated site treatment processes. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts spanning prevention, monitoring, modeling, mitigation, recovery, treatment, waste management and valorization. Much progress has been made in the past years, such as developing innovative waste disposal and response methods as well as assessing and mitigating the environmental risks of different response strategies. Despite substantial scientific and technological progress, major challenges remain in improving response efficiency, reducing environmental risks, advancing treatment technologies, and strengthening sustainable solutions of oil spill response and petroleum waste management. There is a growing need for research that integrates fundamental understanding with practical engineering solutions. This Research Topic is open for submissions alongside the upcoming International Oil Spill Science Conference 2026 in Montreal, Canada (IOSSC 2026), which Frontiers in Environmental Science is proud to be supporting.
