Omics-Based Insights into Abiotic Stress Responses in Non-Model Plants

The study of abiotic stress responses in non-model plants represents a rapidly emerging field that is vital to expanding the diversity and resilience of crops contributing to global food security. Non-model plants, which often include underutilized, orphan, and wild species, harbor a wealth of unique genetic and physiological adaptations to challenging environments that are not fully represented in conventional model plant research. Recent advances in omics technologies—spanning genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics—have enabled researchers to explore these non-model plant systems at unprecedented depth. Nonetheless, the comparatively limited genomic resources, functional annotations, and established protocols for non-model plants pose persistent hurdles, underscoring the need for innovative methodologies and cross-disciplinary collaboration in this domain. This Research Topic aims to catalyze the integration of omics-based approaches for deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying abiotic stress adaptation specifically in non-model plants. The primary objective is to identify novel genes, pathways, and biomarkers that are unique or particularly prominent in these species, thereby facilitating translational research for the development of resilient crops. By emphasizing studies that generate, analyze, and interpret multi-omics data from non-model plant species, this Research Topic encourages submissions that reveal evolutionary adaptations, uncover stress tolerance mechanisms, and propose new avenues for crop improvement beyond traditional models. To gather further insights into the limitations and opportunities of omics-driven research in non-model plant species, this Research Topic welcomes articles focusing, but not limited to, the following themes:- De novo genome and transcriptome sequencing and assembly in non-model plants- Identification of unique stress-responsive genes, proteins, and metabolites- Integrative omics analyses for unveiling complex regulatory networks- Comparative studies between model and non-model species under abiotic stress- Development of computational and bioinformatics tools tailored for non-model plant data- Translational strategies for leveraging non-model plant traits in crop improvement- Omics-assisted breeding efforts in orphan and wild species Topic editors: Pedro Garcia, Zhifu Guo Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77558/omics-based-insights-into-abiotic-stress-responses-in-non-model-plants
