One Health Zoonotic Spillover Governance: Policy, Surveillance, and Pandemic Preparedness
The One Health field examines how human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected in the emergence and spread of infectious diseases. Land-use change, biodiversity loss, agricultural intensification, wildlife trade, climate change, and global mobility can increase opportunities for pathogen spillover. Detecting and containing these threats early remains difficult. This Research Topic considers how policy and institutional practice, alongside bioengineering and biotechnology, can strengthen prevention and preparedness across human, animal, and environmental health systems. This Research Topic examines how bioengineering and biotechnology can strengthen the detection, surveillance, and containment of zoonotic pathogens at the human-animal-environment interface. It will explore which technologies, diagnostic tools, and biosurveillance methods enable earlier identification of spillover risks and more effective outbreak containment, and how these can be deployed across field and laboratory settings. Contributions may also assess technical and institutional barriers to deployment, evaluate existing surveillance and diagnostic technologies, and consider risk assessment approaches for emerging biotechnological interventions in pandemic prevention. To gather further insights into the technological, policy, and biosecurity dimensions of spillover prevention, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Genomic and molecular surveillance technologies for zoonotic pathogen detectionBiosensors and rapid diagnostic platforms for emerging infectious diseasesBiosurveillance networks and early-warning systems, including their policy and institutional contextPathogen discovery and characterisation across sectorsRisk assessment and management tools for biotechnological interventions in spillover preventionBioengineering approaches to disease vector control and containmentAntimicrobial resistance surveillance and biotechnology-based mitigation strategiesValidation and field deployment of novel diagnostic and surveillance technologiesPolicy and institutional practice for cross-sector One Health surveillance and pandemic preparedness Topic editors: Santiago Vega, Daniel Acosta, Musibau Adungbe Bamikole Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85454/one-health-zoonotic-spillover-governance-policy-surveillance-and-pandemic-preparedness
