Optic Neuropathies: Etiologies, Diagnosis, and Treatments

Optic neuropathies encompass a spectrum of conditions characterized by damage to the optic nerve, leading to visual impairment or loss. Etiologies of optic neuropathies are diverse and may include traumatic injuries, glaucoma, inflammatory processes, intracranial hypertension, vascular insufficiency, toxic exposures, hereditary factors, demyelinating diseases, or nutritional deficiency. The damage to the optic nerve can result in partial or full vision loss. Different types of optic neuropathies present with distinct clinical features, necessitating a thorough understanding of their underlying mechanisms for accurate diagnosis and optimal management. Research efforts in this field are crucial to advancing our knowledge of optic neuropathies, improving clinical outcomes, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by these potentially debilitating conditions.GoalThis Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of optic neuropathies, focusing on exploring the diverse etiologies, improving diagnostic approaches, and advancing treatment modalities. We seek to bring together insights from clinicians, researchers, and specialists working in outpatients’, inpatients’, or emergency wards, from diverse fields such as ophthalmology, neurology, neuroimaging, genetics, electrophysiology, and oncology. This collection will enhance our understanding of optic neuropathies and foster the development of innovative interventions to improve patient outcomes.Scope and information for authorsTo gather further insights into the diverse aspects of optic neuropathies, we welcome submissions of various types of manuscripts supported by the journal (including Brief Research Reports, Perspectives, Protocols, Mini-Review, Original Research, etc.) addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Etiologies and pathophysiology of different types of optic neuropathies.- Biomarkers of optic neuropathies.- Features and peculiarities of optic neuritis derived from demyelinating and autoimmune disorders, or other forms.- Novel insights on glaucoma.- Use of artificial intelligence such as deep learning systems for the diagnosis and management of optic neuropathies.- Epidemiological and genetic insights.- Available preventive strategies for optic neuropathies.- Novel diagnostic techniques and imaging modalities for early diagnosis, accurate assessment, and monitoring.- The new frontiers of electrophysiology applied in the field of optic neuropathies. - Emerging therapies and treatment options.- Available surgical approaches.Articles accepted after peer review will be published and appear online as soon as approved for publication.Dr. Sachin Kedar is one of the inventors of pupil simulator, glaucoma app, and episcleral venous pressure as a biomarker for intracranial pressure.
