Optimizing Drug Delivery Strategies for Geriatric Patients: Innovations, Challenges, and Clinical Impact
Drug delivery in the geriatric population presents unique challenges due to age-related physiological changes, polypharmacy, and comorbidities. The global geriatric population is rapidly increasing, and with it, the demand for safe, effective, and patient friendly drug therapies. However, elderly patients often experience altered pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, increased risk of adverse drug reactions, and challenges with medication adherence. Conventional drug delivery systems may not adequately meet the needs of this vulnerable group, highlighting the necessity for targeted, age-appropriate strategies. This Research Topic will explore advanced drug delivery systems, such as nanotechnology-based formulations, transdermal patches, and oral modified-release technologies, tailored for elderly patients. The collection will also address the regulatory, safety, and compliance aspects of geriatric drug delivery, aiming to bridge the gap between innovation and clinical practice. This Research Topic seeks to advance the understanding and application of drug delivery strategies that are specially optimized for the geriatric population. The primary objectives include identifying and analyzing recent technological innovations (such as nanotechnology-based delivery, transdermal patches, and controlled-release oral formulations), assessing their clinical impact, exploring pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations unique to aging, and addressing regulatory and compliance barriers. Furthermore, this topic intends to stimulate discussion on patient-centric approaches and examine how best to translate laboratory innovation into real-world clinical success for older adults. Central questions involve how to mitigate adverse reactions, personalize therapy, and enhance adherence among elderly patients. To gather further insights in the optimization and clinical implementation of geriatric drug delivery, we accept original research articles, reviews, and perspectives covering, but not limited to, the following themes:- Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems for elderly patients- Transdermal and oral modified-release formulations- Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations in aging- Regulatory and safety aspects of geriatric drug delivery- Clinical case studies and real-world applications- Patient adherence and compliance strategies Topic editors: Vivek P Chavda, Rajiv Bajracharya Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77119/optimizing-drug-delivery-strategies-for-geriatric-patients-innovations-challenges-and-clinical-impact
