Oral-Cardiovascular Disease Interconnections: Mechanisms, Multi-Omics, and Population Health Perspectives

Studies investigating the relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular outcomes are abundant, yet the precise mechanisms linking these conditions remain unclear. Other oral health indicators such as dental caries, apical periodontitis, and inflammation of the oral mucosa or tongue have been less extensively studied. In many cases, social determinants of health are also overlooked, potentially confounding the observed associations. Multi omics approaches offer a way to examine multiple biological layers, including the genome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome, to identify shared pathways between oral and cardiovascular diseases. Another important area of research involves characterizing how the oral and systemic microbiomes change when these diseases occur together or independently.This Research topic aim to attract studies that focus on determining mechanisms linking oral diseases and cardiovascular diseases, studies that integrate multi-omics data, comprehensive oral-systemic health assessments, and social determinants of health.
