Oral Microbes, Microbiome, Metabolites and Host Responses: Linking Oral and Systemic Health

The oral cavity is home to a complex and dynamic microbial community that plays a vital role in oral and systemic health. Disruptions to this community (dysbiosis) can lead to diseases such as periodontitis, dental caries, and oral mucositis, as well as systemic diseases like infections and cancer. Microbial metabolites and host-pathogen interactions significantly influence host responses, linking oral health to broader physiological outcomes. Understanding microbial resistance mechanisms, including phenotypic and genetic factors, is essential for developing antimicrobial strategies and microbiome-targeted therapies such as probiotics and precision medicine. This Topic seeks original researches exploring the oral microbiome, metabolomics, host responses, and innovative clinical approaches for health promotion. The goal of this Topic is to deepen our understanding of the complex relationships between oral microorganisms, their metabolites, and host responses. These relationships impact not only oral health but also systemic health. By bringing together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews, we aim to reveal the dynamic interactions between the oral microbiome and human physiological functions. This special issue will focus on the importance of microbiome imbalances in disease development, the role of metabolomics in elucidating disease mechanisms, and innovative approaches to diagnosis and treatment, including microbiome-targeted interventions and precision medicine. We will promote interdisciplinary collaboration between clinical microbiology, molecular biology, and translational medicine, and encourage new insights into antibiotic resistance strategies and the therapeutic potential of probiotics. Ultimately, we aim to provide researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals with the information and inspiration to develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies, and to promote oral health as an integral part of holistic health. This topic invites high-quality research papers, review articles, mini-reviews, brief reports, systematic reviews, perspectives, methods, and opinions involving all aspects of oral microbes and microbiome, metabolites and host responses linking oral, and systemic health. Within this scope, topics of specific interest include oral microbes and microbiome, metabolites, but are not limited to the following themes:> Early-life development of oral microbiota and oral health> Characterization of oral microbiota in aging populations> Oral microbiota as biomarkers for detection of oral and systemic diseases> Oral-systemic interactions mediated by oral microbiota> Host–microbe interactions and cellular responses to oral microbes, microbial products, and metabolites> Microbic-, Microbiome- and metabolome-based risk assessment for oral and systemic health Topic editors: Naofumi Tamaki, Shinya Kageyama, Hiroki Takeuchi Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83498/oral-microbes-microbiome-metabolites-and-host-responses-linking-oral-and-systemic-health
