Outfield Strengthening Technology for Metallurgical Processes and Advanced Functional Materials Preparation
Metallurgical processing and advanced functional materials preparation are increasingly adopting outfield strengthening technologies, including microwave, ultrasonic, electromagnetic, high-gravity, plasma, and related approaches. These technologies can modify heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, nucleation, phase evolution, crystallization, and interfacial interactions, offering alternatives to conventional processing routes. However, traditional metallurgical and materials-synthesis methods often involve high energy consumption, lengthy processing times, limited process control, and environmental burdens. Current studies indicate that outfield-assisted processes can accelerate reactions, improve microstructural homogeneity, enhance product quality, and facilitate the formation of materials with tailored structural and functional properties. Despite these advances, the mechanisms underlying outfield–matter interactions remain incompletely understood, and challenges persist in process scale-up, energy-efficiency assessment, equipment design, reproducibility, and integration with continuous manufacturing. Further investigation is therefore needed to establish structure–process–property relationships and translate laboratory-scale innovations into reliable and sustainable technologies. This Research Topic aims to examine the fundamental principles, processing strategies, and applications of outfield strengthening technologies in metallurgical processes and advanced functional materials preparation. It will address how different outfields influence reaction pathways, transport phenomena, phase transformation, microstructure, surface chemistry, and functional performance. Contributions may also explore the hypotheses that outfield-assisted processing can reduce energy and material consumption, improve product uniformity, enhance the efficiency of synthesis and separation, and enable properties that are difficult to achieve through conventional methods. The Research Topic further seeks to identify the opportunities and limitations of these technologies and to support their development toward scalable, environmentally responsible, and industrially relevant applications. To gather further insights into outfield-assisted metallurgical processing and the preparation, modification, and application of advanced functional materials, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Mechanisms of outfield–matter interaction in chemical reactions: microwave, ultrasonic, high-gravity, electromagnetic, and plasma fieldso Outfield-assisted metallurgical extraction, leaching, reduction, and separation chemistryo Outfield-assisted synthesis of inorganic functional materials: nucleation, crystallization, and phase evolution in oxide-, sulfide-, and carbon-based systemso Outfield regulation of interfacial and colloidal chemistryo Preparation and activity tuning of catalysts for energy and environmental applications under outfieldso Outfield-assisted degradation of pollutants and reaction pathway analysiso Green assessment of outfield processes: energy input, reagent consumption, and by-product control Topic editors: Yi Xia, Wei Yan, Lei Gao Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85151/outfield-strengthening-technology-for-metallurgical-processes-and-advanced-functional-materials-preparation
