Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Diabetic Complications: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Approaches

Diabetes is associated with chronic complications affecting the kidneys, nerves, retina, vasculature, cardiovascular system, and wound healing processes. Although these complications differ in their clinical presentation, many share overlapping mechanisms driven by oxidative stress, impaired antioxidant responses, and persistent inflammation. These interconnected processes contribute to tissue injury, vascular dysfunction, impaired repair, and disease progression.Hyperglycemia and metabolic dysregulation can promote excessive production of reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial stress, activation of redox-sensitive pathways, and sustained inflammatory responses. In turn, inflammatory mediators and immune-cell activation may amplify oxidative damage, creating a cycle that worsens diabetes-related tissue injury. Pathways such as Nrf2/Keap1 signaling, inflammasome activation, and cytokine-mediated inflammatory responses are therefore important areas for understanding the onset and progression of diabetic complications. This Research Topic welcomes mechanistic, translational, and clinically relevant studies exploring the interaction between oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic complications. Particular interest will be given to studies that identify molecular drivers, biomarkers, or therapeutic approaches that may support improved prevention, monitoring, or treatment. We welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to:• Redox-sensitive and inflammatory signaling pathways involved in diabetic complications.• Nrf2/Keap1 signaling, antioxidant defense systems, and inflammasome activation in diabetes-related tissue injury.• Oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms underlying key diabetic complications, including nephropathy, vascular dysfunction, and impaired wound healing.• Biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, disease progression, or therapeutic response.• Pharmacological, nutritional, or natural compound-based strategies targeting oxidative stress and inflammation.• Translational studies using cellular, animal, or clinical models of diabetic complications.
