Paediatric Food Allergy: Primary Prevention Strategies and Therapeutic Interventions
Paediatric food allergy represents a major global health burden, with rising prevalence across diverse populations over the past two decades. While significant progress has been made in identifying early-life risk factors and novel therapeutic modalities, translating these advances into standardized clinical practice requires a dedicated focus on early intervention and disease modification. This Research Topic focuses specifically on the dual pillars of Primary Prevention and Therapeutic Interventions in paediatric food allergy. By bridging population-level prevention strategies with individualised therapeutic approaches, this collection aims to establish evidence-based frameworks for preventing sensitisation and achieving sustained unresponsiveness or tolerance in children. We welcome original research, clinical trials, systematic reviews, and perspectives focusing on:Primary Prevention and Early-Life Strategies:o Population cohort studies and randomised controlled trials evaluating early allergen introduction, maternal dietary factors, breastfeeding, and infant formula choices.o Environmental and cutaneous barrier-targeted early-life interventions.o Real-world implementation, global guideline adherence, and socio-economic or regional barriers to primary prevention uptake.Immunotherapy and Emerging Therapeutics:o Clinical efficacy, safety, and protocol optimization for Oral Immunotherapy (OIT), Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT), and Epicutaneous Immunotherapy (EPIT) across paediatric age groups.o Adjuvant-enhanced protocols (e.g., gut microbiota modulators, co-administration of butyrate or biologics) to improve desensitisation outcomes.o Patient selection criteria, biological predictors of sustained unresponsiveness vs. transient desensitisation, and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) metrics for children and families.Target Contributor Community:o Paediatric allergists and clinical immunologistso Clinical trialists in allergen immunotherapyo Epidemiologists and public health researchers focused on allergy prevention policyo Paediatricians and primary care clinicians implementing early introduction guidelineso Translational researchers studying mucosal barrier protection and adjuvant therapies Topic editors: Enza D'Auria, Preeti Joshi, Bee Wah Lee Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83098/paediatric-food-allergy-primary-prevention-strategies-and-therapeutic-interventions
