Participatory and Creative Approaches to Human Performance across Educational, Psychosocial, Health, Community, and Workplace Contexts

This Research Topic explores how participatory, creative, and arts-informed approaches can advance the understanding and enhancement of human performance across a range of educational, psychosocial, health, community, and workplace contexts. The collection invites contributions from diverse performance domains, including the performing arts, sport, education and training, community and social performance, organizational and workplace settings, and other high-demand or high-stakes professional environments. Particular emphasis is placed on work that connects these approaches to core Performance Science priorities, such as the development of performance-related skills, underlying psychological and physiological mechanisms, and meaningful, measurable outcomes. We welcome empirical studies, theoretical contributions, methodological innovations, program evaluations, case studies, and reviews that conceptualize performance as a dynamic, context-sensitive, and socially embedded activity. The Research Topic aims to highlight how participatory and creative practices can support performance education and training, performance psychology, health and wellbeing, sustainable performance careers, and effective performance in social, organizational, and community settings.Areas of interest include (but are not limited to):• Development and assessment of performance-related skills (e.g., creativity, collaboration, adaptability, mastery, embodied learning)• Psychological and physiological mechanisms relevant to performance (e.g., attention, emotion regulation, resilience, motivation, flow, stress and anxiety management)• Effects of participatory and creative interventions on wellbeing, mental health, recovery, and long-term performance sustainability• Educational, training, and professional development models grounded in participatory or creative practices• Performance in social, organizational, community, and workplace contexts (e.g., leadership, teamwork, social identity, cultural and institutional influences)• Evaluation and measurement of performance processes and outcomes, including innovative, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches• Arts-based and practice-led research approaches to understanding and enhancing human performance, including participatory, embodied, and creative methodologiesThrough this collection, we aim to bridge discipline-specific and interdisciplinary perspectives, supporting evidence-informed approaches to performance enhancement, skill development, and wellbeing. By bringing together diverse methods and applied contexts, the Research Topic seeks to generate new insight into how participatory and creative strategies enable individuals and groups to function effectively and sustainably across varied performance environments.
