Performance Evolution and Reliability Assessment of Energy Storage Systems under Challenging Operating Conditions
The rapid development of renewable energy integration, electrified transportation, smart grids, and flexible energy infrastructures has significantly increased the demand for advanced energy storage systems. Energy storage technologies, including batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen-based storage, and hybrid energy storage systems, play critical roles in renewable energy utilization, power system flexibility, load balancing, and energy management. With the increasing deployment of energy storage systems in diverse applications, including electric vehicles, energy storage stations, microgrids, and renewable energy systems, their operating environments are becoming increasingly complex. Variations in temperature, charging and discharging conditions, cycling profiles, load fluctuations, and long-term operation can significantly influence the performance evolution, degradation behavior, and reliability of energy storage systems. Understanding the mechanisms behind performance changes and reliability degradation under challenging operating conditions is therefore essential for improving the long-term utilization and sustainable deployment of advanced energy storage technologies. This Research Topic aims to present recent advances in the performance evolution and reliability assessment of advanced energy storage systems under challenging operating conditions.
