Periodontal Disease with Other Aspects of Dentistry: Endodontics, Orthodontics, Pedodontic Dentistry, and Others

Periodontal disease is a complex inflammatory condition influenced by microbial dysbiosis, host susceptibility, systemic health, oral hygiene, and local anatomical and treatment-related factors. Its effects extend beyond the periodontium, creating important clinical links with endodontics, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, implant dentistry, and oral surgery. Pulpal and periodontal lesions may present with overlapping clinical and radiographic features, while orthodontic tooth movement, caries, developmental anomalies, restorative margins, and implant placement can affect periodontal stability. In children and adolescents, early periodontal and gingival conditions may influence oral development and future disease risk. Although interdisciplinary care is increasingly recognized as essential, differences in diagnostic criteria, referral pathways, treatment sequencing, and outcome assessment continue to complicate coordinated management. This Research Topic aims to explore the biological, diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic connections between periodontal disease and other areas of dentistry. It will examine how collaboration across specialties can improve the differential diagnosis of pulpal and periodontal lesions, support periodontal health during orthodontic and restorative treatment, and enhance outcomes in paediatric, endodontic, prosthodontic, implant, and surgical care. The Research Topic will also consider patient-specific risk assessment, digital technologies, minimally invasive therapies, host-modulation strategies, and integrated clinical pathways for preventing disease progression and preserving teeth and supporting tissues. To gather further insights in the interdisciplinary prevention, diagnosis, and management of periodontal disease across dental specialties, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Periodontal–endodontic lesions, differential diagnosis, and combined treatment• Interactions between periodontal disease, pulpal pathology, and periapical lesions• Periodontal considerations in orthodontic diagnosis, tooth movement, and retention• Management of gingival recession, dehiscence, and periodontal complications during orthodontic treatment• Periodontal and gingival health in paediatric and adolescent patients• Early detection and prevention of periodontal disease across the life course• Caries, restorative treatment, dental materials, and periodontal tissue health• Prosthodontic design, restorative margins, and maintenance of the periodontium• Periodontal and peri-implant disease in implant-supported rehabilitation• Interactions between periodontal disease, occlusion, bruxism, and temporomandibular function• Periodontal surgery, oral surgery, bone regeneration, and soft-tissue management• Oral microbiome, host response, systemic health, and interdisciplinary risk assessment• Digital imaging, artificial intelligence, and integrated treatment planning• Patient education, behavioural interventions, maintenance programmes, and adherence• Clinical trials, cohort studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and translational research on interdisciplinary dental care Topic editors: ABDULLAH SECKIN ERTUGRUL, Ismail Tasdemir Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/86211/periodontal-disease-with-other-aspects-of-dentistry-endodontics-orthodontics-pedodontic-dentistry-and-others
