Perioperative Anesthetic Management in Veterinary Emergency Medicine

The field of veterinary anesthesiology faces extraordinary complexity in the perioperative management of emergency patients. Emergency situations often involve animals with unstable physiological states, pre-existing illness, or trauma, making them particularly vulnerable to anesthetic complications. With time for preoperative stabilization often limited, anesthetic management must adapt rapidly to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of such cases. Despite advancements in anesthetic techniques and monitoring modalities, there remains a significant risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality among these high-risk patient populations. Recent literature highlights the need for tailored approaches that address both the physiological status and species-specific considerations, yet existing practices often draw heavily on protocols designed for elective procedures or human medicine, leaving important gaps in veterinary-specific guidance. This underlines the necessity for robust, evidence-based practices tailored to the unique demands of veterinary emergency medicine. This Research Topic aims to critically assess and enhance the perioperative anesthetic management of emergency patients in veterinary medicine. The primary objectives are to evaluate current clinical guidelines, analyze emerging evidence, and identify the most effective strategies for stabilization, anesthesia induction, and intraoperative monitoring. Furthermore, the Research Topic seeks to encourage innovative solutions and interdisciplinary collaboration for optimizing perioperative outcomes. Central questions include: What are the best approaches to minimize risk under acute, time-limited circumstances? How can species differences and individual risk factors be better incorporated into anesthetic plans? What new monitoring or stabilization methods show promise in improving survival and recovery rates for emergency veterinary patients?Given the urgent and unpredictable nature of veterinary emergency care, this Research Topic will focus on perioperative management for animals requiring immediate anesthetic intervention, excluding elective and non-emergent surgical cases. Articles may encompass retrospective analyses, prospective studies, reviews, and case reports addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Strategies for rapid physiological stabilization prior to anesthesia- Anesthetic drug selection and dosing in unstable or compromised patients- Innovations in perioperative monitoring and hemodynamic support- Species-specific considerations and adaptations for emergency anesthesia- Multidisciplinary coordination and communication during emergency procedures- Outcomes, complications, and quality improvement measures in emergency anesthetic care Topic editors: Angela Briganti, Giuliano Ravasio, Ludovica Chiavaccini Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/74529/perioperative-anesthetic-management-in-veterinary-emergency-medicine
