Perovskite‑based Technologies for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Solutions

Perovskite and nanomaterials research stand at the forefront of sustainable energy and environmental engineering innovation. Despite longstanding reliance on silicon-based technologies, recent developments in perovskite photovoltaic cells, electromagnetic metasurfaces, and nanostructured materials promise to overcome the efficiency limitations and application constraints of traditional approaches. Crucial challenges—such as the durability of nanomaterials under environmental stress, the toxicity of lead and other hazardous elements, and the scalability and eco-friendliness of fabrication—are increasingly shaping the current research landscape. Moreover, the integration of nanomaterials in pollutant sensing and water purification offers multifaceted opportunities for addressing both energy generation and environmental remediation. Notable studies now demonstrate the potential for lead-free perovskite solar cells and robust oxide-based photocatalysts, yet persistence in environmental deployment remains under debate due to stability and cost concerns.Recent breakthroughs have centered on the development of flexible, lightweight, and efficient perovskite photovoltaic technologies, as well as advanced hybrid modules that combine solar, thermal, and electromagnetic metasurface functionalities. Emerging evidence highlights the promise of perovskite and related nanomaterials in circular economy pathways, enabling adaptive, high-performance energy devices and advanced environmental monitoring systems. However, unresolved issues such as scalable synthesis methods, reliable long-term operation in diverse environments, and comprehensive toxicity management present continuing barriers. As research communities work toward holistic solutions, there is a pressing need to harmonize material innovation with sustainable, real-world applications. This Research Topic aims to gather and disseminate cutting-edge breakthroughs in the development, integration, and deployment of perovskite and nanostructured materials for sustainable energy conversion, pollutant mitigation, and environmental sensing. By bringing together experts from materials science, environmental engineering, and energy technology, the objective is to advance understanding of how these materials can overcome current limitations in performance, durability, sustainability, and scalability. Specific goals include accelerating the adoption of lead-free and eco-friendly nanomaterials, boosting efficiency in energy harvesting devices, and realizing practical, adaptive solutions for large-scale environmental monitoring and remediation. The research topic covers advances in high-efficiency, stable, and eco-friendly perovskite and nanomaterials, focusing on their applications in solar, catalysis, sensor, and metamaterial technology.
