Perovskite nanocrystals: bridging synthesis strategies and bio-related detection applications
Research on perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) has progressed rapidly in recent years due to their exceptional photophysical properties—including high photoluminescence quantum yield, strong light absorption, compositional tunability, and sharp emission profiles. These features have enabled significant strides in optoelectronic devices such as LEDs, solar cells, photodetectors, and lasers. Yet, despite these advancements, PNCs remain hampered by poor environmental stability: they are especially susceptible to degradation by water, oxygen, heat, and ultraviolet light owing to their low formation energies and intrinsic ionic structure. This instability creates a major barrier to the scalable application and commercialization of PNC-based technologies, sparking an ongoing search for robust synthesis and stabilization techniques that enable reliable performance, particularly in demanding settings such as biological or medical applications.Presently, the challenge of poor PNC stability not only undermines practical applications but also slows advances in green, aqueous-phase synthetic strategies. Recent studies, however, indicate that carefully controlled water incorporation during synthesis can passivate surface defects and boost luminescence, highlighting a promising but underexplored direction for achieving stable and highly functional nanocrystals. There is, therefore, a pressing need for deeper investigation into simple, flexible, and scalable techniques that marry high luminescence with long-term aqueous stability—ultimately unlocking new opportunities for perovskites in real-world settings, including disease detection and diagnostic technologies. This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive platform to accelerate the development and deployment of perovskite nanocrystals, particularly emphasizing advances in synthesis, stabilization, and their versatile bio-related detection applications. By collating insights from chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine, this topic seeks to address critical questions regarding the design, production, and enhancement of PNCs for practical purposes.Recognizing the wide potential and current limits of this research area, the scope encompasses, but is not restricted to, investigations into PNC synthesis, morphological tuning, stability under various conditions, and bio-detection technologies.
