Perovskite Structural Modulation: Advancing Solar and Light Emission Technologies

Perovskite materials have rapidly emerged as a leading class of compounds in the field of optoelectronics, driving significant advances in solar cell and light-emitting device technologies. Despite their remarkable optoelectronic properties and the impressive progress achieved in perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) and perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), fundamental challenges persist regarding stability, efficiency, and scalability. As researchers push the boundaries of material science, the structural diversity of perovskites—including their transitions from three-dimensional to lower-dimensional forms—remains an area of intense inquiry. Notably, ongoing debates continue on how best to manipulate composition, microstructure, and dimensionality to overcome issues related to device longevity, toxicity, and large-scale applicability.Recent studies have demonstrated that structural modulation of perovskites—including the strategic engineering of mixed-dimensional and hybrid perovskite assemblies—can fine-tune optoelectronic properties, offering new opportunities to reconcile high performance with operational durability. The integration of different perovskite structures within a unified matrix has shown promise in synergizing desirable features, such as improved charge separation, reduced non-radiative recombination, and enhanced environmental resilience. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of structure-property relationships and universally applicable design rules is still lacking, limiting the translation of laboratory breakthroughs into commerically viable and sustainable devices. This Research Topic aims to systematically investigate the principles and impacts of perovskite structural modulation on the performance of photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. It seeks to uncover how deliberate architectural design—from zero-dimensional quantum dots to complex, hybrid lattices—can address existing efficiency, stability, and sustainability barriers. By establishing clearer correlations between perovskite structure, assembly engineering, and device performance, this collection will lay the groundwork for the rational selection and optimization of perovskite materials in advanced optoelectronic applications. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses original research, reviews, and theoretical studies exploring the control, assembly, and integration of perovskite structures for energy and lighting applications. Submissions should critically engage with the interplay between structural modulation and optoelectronic properties, and may address (but are not limited to) the following themes:• Structure-property relationships across perovskite dimensionalities (0D, 1D, 2D, 3D)• Mixed-dimensional and multi-type perovskite assemblies for device enhancement• Influence of structural modulation on stability, toxicity, and sustainability• Advanced characterization and modeling of perovskite architectures• Scalable synthesis and integration strategies for innovative PeSCs and PeLEDs• Universal guidelines for selecting or designing optimal perovskite materials Topic editors: Yuanhang Cheng, Qing-Dan Yang, Hu Guo Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79243/perovskite-structural-modulation-advancing-solar-and-light-emission-technologies
