Personalised Prosthodontic Care: Integrating Artificial Intelligence with 3D Printing

The rapid evolution of digital technologies is fundamentally transforming prosthodontics, enabling a shift from conventional treatment approaches towards the delivery of precise and patient-centred care. Artificial intelligence (AI), advanced imaging, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), intraoral and facial scanning, and additive manufacturing (3D printing) are reshaping every stage of the prosthodontic workflow—from diagnosis and treatment planning to prosthesis fabrication and long-term maintenance. The convergence of AI and 3D printing represents a new era of intelligent digital dentistry, where personalized prosthodontic care is increasingly achievable through integrated, automated, and patient-specific workflows. AI can support the analysis and integration of complex clinical, anatomical, functional, and esthetic information, while 3D printing can enable the production of customised prosthodontic restorations and devices. Their combination may improve design flexibility, treatment efficiency, restorative accuracy, esthetics, function, and patient experience. However, important challenges remain concerning data quality, algorithm validation, clinical reliability, material selection, manufacturing consistency, transparency, clinician oversight, cost, regulation, and the translation of emerging technologies into routine care. Further interdisciplinary research is needed to clarify how these technologies can be effectively combined and evaluated across different prosthodontic applications. This Research Topic aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for clinicians, researchers, engineers, material scientists, computer scientists, and industry experts to present innovative research exploring the integration of artificial intelligence and additive manufacturing in prosthodontics. We particularly encourage submissions that bridge technological innovation with clinical translation and demonstrate meaningful improvements in patient care. Studies centred exclusively on diagnostic AI on its own, complete diagnosis-to-maintenance digital workflows, additive manufacturing without a personalisation or AI component, orthodontic applications, or scaffold fabrication fall outside the scope of this Research Topic. To gather further insights into the development, integration, evaluation, and clinical translation of AI-enabled and 3D-printed solutions for personalised prosthodontic care, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: • Computational design and virtual models: Machine learning, generative AI, digital twins, and virtual patients for personalised CAD/CAM design of fixed, removable, implant-supported, and maxillofacial prostheses.• Intelligent materials and fabrication: AI-assisted material selection, fabrication-parameter optimisation, and additive manufacturing using polymers, ceramics, metals, multi-material systems, and hybrid materials.• Integrated clinical workflows: Digital pipelines linking imaging, intraoral scanning, patient data, AI modelling, restorative design, and 3D printing for the generation of personalised restorations.• Clinical performance and patient outcomes: Accuracy, precision, marginal and internal fit, mechanical performance, esthetics, function, treatment efficiency, and chairside adjustments of AI-designed and 3D-printed restorations compared to conventional or subtractive approaches.• Ethics, governance, and implementation: Explainable and trustworthy AI, data quality, algorithmic bias, privacy, cybersecurity, regulatory standards, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, interoperability, clinician oversight, and interdisciplinary training.
