Pharmacology and Delivery of Tryptophan Derivatives for Health Applications

Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, is an indispensable part of human nutrition, primarily acquired through dietary means. Its absorption occurs chiefly in the small intestine, and it is metabolized into bioactive compounds through the kynurenine, indole, and serotonin pathways. These metabolic pathways generate breakdown products with significant roles extending beyond nutrition, impacting aspects such as host immunity, stress response, and microbial adaptation. Recently, there has been a surge in research focused on discovering new derivatives of tryptophan, driving innovative therapeutic interventions. Yet, ongoing debates exist around the optimal usage, mechanisms, and potential long-term effects of these derivatives, underscoring a dire need for comprehensive research. This Research Topic aims to explore the vast potential of tryptophan derivatives, focusing on their pharmacological properties and innovative delivery methods for therapeutic applications. By dissecting specific action mechanisms and pharmacokinetics, we aim to shape effective, safe strategies for employing these compounds in clinical settings. Our primary objective is to unravel critical questions related to their efficacy, safety, and novel applications and to test hypotheses regarding their roles in advancing health outcomes across various fields. To gather further insights within the "One Health" framework emphasizing collaborative approaches, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Chemistry and medicinal chemistry of tryptophan and its derivativesNanotechnology and microfluidics for personalized drug deliveryTryptophan derivatives and human healthTryptophan derivatives and animal healthDietary interventions targeting tryptophan pathwaysFuture perspectives in research and industrial applicationsWe invite contributions from interdisciplinary fields to emphasize the impact of tryptophan derivatives, aiming to inspire innovative research and application across health, industry, and environmental sustainability. This Research Topic encompasses fundamental studies and both preclinical and clinical applications, fostering a holistic exploration of tryptophan’s therapeutic potential.Article types: Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Opinion, and Perspective.
