Photodermatology: Exploring Phototoxic, Photoallergic, and Autoimmune Light-Induced Skin Disorders

Photodermatology, a specialized branch of dermatology, focuses on understanding the effects of light on the skin and the spectrum of disorders it can induce. Light-induced skin disorders present a unique set of challenges, as they encompass a broad range of reactions, including photoallergic contact dermatitis, phototoxic reactions, and immune-mediated photodermatoses. Current research highlights significant gaps in knowledge, particularly regarding the molecular and immunological underpinnings of these conditions. Recent studies have made strides in identifying the triggers and pathways involved, yet the intricate interactions between varying light wavelengths and skin responsiveness remain incompletely understood. This highlights the need for further investigation into the precise mechanisms at play and the potential for therapeutic advancements. This Research Topic aims to assemble recent advances in the understanding, diagnosis, and management of light-induced skin disorders. It seeks to explore the molecular and immunological mechanisms underlying photosensitivity, the identification and characterization of photoallergens, and innovate approaches in photoprotection and phototherapy. By encouraging interdisciplinary contributions from dermatology, immunology, and photobiology, the goal is to enhance patient care for those with photosensitive skin disorders, refining diagnostic tools and developing targeted treatment options. Specific questions include: What molecular processes underlie photoallergic responses? How can we better detect and manage photoallergens? And, can novel photoprotection strategies mitigate immune-mediated reactions?Reconciling insights from diverse disciplines, this Research Topic focuses on the broad domain of photodermatology and light-induced reactions. It welcomes articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Mechanisms of photoallergic contact dermatitisPhototoxic vs photoallergic reactions: key differences and similaritiesImmune-mediated photodermatoses, including lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositisInnovative photoprotection strategies and phototherapy techniquesAdvances in characterizing and managing light-exacerbated skin conditions Topic editors: Francisco José Navarro Triviño, Jose Aguilera Arjona Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/73212/photodermatology-exploring-phototoxic-photoallergic-and-autoimmune-light-induced-skin-disorders
