Photodetectors, Solar Cells, Power Devices, 2D Materials, and THz technologies

The landscape of semiconductor technology is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by the demand for higher efficiency, faster operation speeds, and miniaturization. Traditional silicon-based electronics are approaching physical limits, necessitating the exploration of novel materials and architectures. Key among these are two-dimensional (2D) materials (such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides) and wide-bandgap semiconductors. These materials offer exceptional electrical, optical, and thermal properties that are revolutionizing the fields of optoelectronics and high-frequency electronics. Specifically, the interplay between advanced material synthesis and device engineering is creating new paradigms for photodetectors, solar energy harvesting, power management, and terahertz (THz) communication systems. The primary goal of this Research Topic is to consolidate the latest advancements in emerging semiconductor technologies, bridging the gap between fundamental material science and practical device applications. While 2D materials and wide-bandgap semiconductors hold immense promise, challenges remain regarding their scalable synthesis, stability, and integration into existing electronic platforms. This Research Topic aims to address these technical hurdles by highlighting innovative strategies for improving the performance metrics of next-generation devices. We aim to explore how defect engineering, heterostructure design, and interface optimization can enhance the sensitivity of photodetectors, the power conversion efficiency of solar cells, and the breakdown voltage of power devices. Furthermore, we seek to advance the development of THz technologies, which are critical for future 6G communications and non-destructive imaging, by leveraging the unique properties of these advanced materials. We welcome the submission of Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, and Perspective articles that cover the synthesis, characterization, and application of advanced materials in electronic and optoelectronic devices.Specific themes of interest include, but are not limited to:- Synthesis and characterization of 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures. - Design and fabrication of high-performance photodetectors (UV to IR).- Next-generation solar cells: Perovskites, organic, and quantum dot photovoltaics.- Wide bandgap power devices (GaN, SiC, Ga2O3) for energy efficiency.- Terahertz sources, detectors, and modulators based on novel materials.- Physics of carrier transport and recombination in low-dimensional systems.device integration and packaging challenges.
