Physiological and Behavioral Functions of Oxytocin
Oxytocin research stands at the intersection of neurobiology, endocrinology, and behavioral science. Traditionally recognized for its roles in childbirth and lactation, oxytocin has recently garnered attention for its complex influence on a variety of physiological processes and behavioral patterns. Emerging evidence highlights oxytocin as a critical modulator not only in pair-bonding and parent-child attachment but also in promoting animal-human and broader social bonding. Despite this progress, the full spectrum of oxytocin's effects and mechanisms remains a subject of dynamic investigation, with ongoing debates over its implications in human well-being and the biological bases of social relationships.Recent studies underscore oxytocin’s significance across the lifespan—from its impact on early development and pediatric social functioning, to its roles in empathy, trust, and age-related changes in social behavior. Breakthroughs using animal models as well as human cohorts have revealed intricate pathways by which oxytocin shapes behavior and physiology. Yet, despite these advances, gaps remain in understanding the causal mechanisms, individual variability in oxytocin response, and its therapeutic potential across diverse populations and contexts. This Research Topic aims at advancing knowledge of the physiological and behavioral functions of oxytocin by uniting research spanning the molecular, developmental, and social domains. It seeks to foster interdisciplinary discussion and promote novel insights into how oxytocin contributes to physical health, psychological well-being, social connection, and aging across species. To gather further insights in the broad but focused domain of oxytocin’s functions, we welcome articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:- Oxytocin’s molecular and cellular mechanisms in physiology- Oxytocin’s role in pair bonding, parent-child, and social relationships- Oxytocin and behavior across the lifespan, including aging and pediatric populations- Variability of oxytocin effects among individuals and populations- Therapeutic implications of oxytocin for health and social functioning- Animal and human studies on oxytocin-mediated social cognitionWe welcome original research articles, reviews, and mini-reviews addressing these themes.
