Plant Diversity: The Key to Ecosystem Resilience in a Changing World, volume II

This Research Topic is part of the series: Plant Diversity: The Key to Ecosystem Resilience in a Changing WorldThe field of ecological research has long established that plant diversity is a crucial factor supporting the stability and health of ecosystems. With the accelerating pace of climate fluctuations, more frequent natural disasters, and ongoing human impacts, understanding the mechanisms by which plant diversity enhances ecosystem resilience has never been more important. Research to date demonstrates that diverse plant communities contribute significantly to ecosystem functions—such as productivity, nutrient cycling, soil stability, and resistance to pests and diseases—thereby fortifying the ability of ecosystems to withstand and recover from disturbances. However, landscapes with reduced plant diversity are consistently shown to be more vulnerable and less capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions. Despite these advances, there is a clear need for deeper examination of the pathways and interactions that underpin the protective effects of plant diversity. This Research Topic aims to uncover the intricate relationships between plant diversity and ecosystem resilience, focusing on how diverse plant communities enable ecosystems to sustain critical functions and recover from adversity. Specifically, it seeks to improve our understanding of the varied mechanisms at play, offering new perspectives to inform conservation strategies and land management practices. By gathering evidence from multiple approaches and contexts, this topic intends to highlight the practical implications of maintaining rich plant diversity in order to preserve ecosystem stability under global change. The scope of this Research Topic covers studies exploring the direct and indirect contributions of plant diversity to ecosystem resilience, but excludes research unrelated to plant communities or resilience outcomes. To gather further insights in these areas, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Impacts of plant diversity on ecosystem processes such as productivity, nutrient cycling, and species interactionso Relationships between plant diversity and the delivery of ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, water purification, and pest regulationo Influences of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the plant diversity–resilience relationshipo Innovations in ecological modeling, remote sensing, and molecular techniques for studying plant diversity and ecosystem stabilityo Synthesis and meta-analyses of experimental, field-based, and long-term observational studies on plant diversity and ecosystem response dynamicsWe welcome the submission of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, field studies, and experimental papers that contribute to a holistic understanding of plant diversity’s role in maintaining and enhancing ecosystem resilience.
