Plant–Environment Interactions and Abiotic Stress Responses in Horticultural Crops

Horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, medicinal & aromatic and plantation crops, are highly sensitive to environmental factors and are increasingly affected by abiotic stresses such as drought, heat, salinity, heavy metals and flooding. Therefore, understanding plant–environment interactions is essential for improving the resilience and sustainability of horticultural production systems. This Research Topic also highlights recent advances in revealing the physiological, biochemical, molecular, and genetic mechanisms underlying stress responses in horticultural crops. We welcome contributions that explore plant adaptation to environmental challenges, innovative phenotyping approaches, and breeding strategies for developing stress-resilient cultivars. The collection encourages interdisciplinary studies integrating horticulture, plant physiology, molecular biology, breeding, and crop management. Potential themes include, but are not limited to:• Plant responses to abiotic stresses such as drought, heat, cold, salinity, flooding, heavy metals and nutrient deficiencies• Plant–environment interactions in terms of growth, development, yield, and quality• Physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying stress tolerance and adaptation• Root system architecture and below-ground responses to environmental stress• Molecular and genomic approaches to understanding stress responses• High-throughput phenotyping and digital tools for stress evaluation• Breeding strategies for stress-resilient horticultural crops• Climate change impacts on horticultural production systems• Multi-environment or multi-season evaluation of superior germplasm or advanced breeding lines• Integrated crop management practices for stress mitigation Topic editors: Koundinya A.V.V., Senthilkumar K Muthusamy, Subhankar Mandal Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79596/plant-environment-interactions-and-abiotic-stress-responses-in-horticultural-crops
