Plant-Soil Probiotics in Extreme Ecosystems

Plant–soil interactions in extreme ecosystems, such as arid, saline, and high-altitude environments; are profoundly shaped by stresses including nutrient limitation, osmotic imbalance, and temperature extremes. In such settings, plant–soil microbial relationships are vital for ecosystem function and resilience. Recent studies have highlighted the impact of beneficial microorganisms, or “plant–soil probiotics,” in improving plant establishment, enhancing stress tolerance, and supporting soil health. These microbial consortia, often extremophilic or extremotolerant, can drive nutrient cycling, produce protective metabolites, and improve plant performance under challenging conditions. However, significant gaps remain in understanding how these probiotic communities assemble, function, and interact with plants in extreme environments. This Research Topic aims to foster cross-disciplinary insights into how plant–soil probiotic systems operate under combined environmental stresses. Our objective is to expand knowledge of microbial consortia that promote plant resilience, clarify mechanisms through which these communities influence plant and soil responses to stress, and develop frameworks for applying plant–soil probiotics in sustainable agriculture and restoration. Innovative research using synthetic communities (SynComs), multi-omics, and field-based studies are especially encouraged. We welcome contributions that cover, but are not limited to:*Microbial community assembly and succession in extreme soils*Plant–soil–microbe interactions governing stress resilience*Functional and mechanistic studies of extremophilic microorganisms*Synthetic microbial community design and application*Multi-omics and field validation approaches for plant–soil probioticsWe invite original research, reviews, perspectives, and methodological papers advancing sustainable solutions for agriculture and restoration in extreme environments.
