Polyanion Active Materials for Safe and Sustainable Rechargeable Batteries
Polyanion-based active materials—such as phosphates, fluorophosphates, pyrophosphates, silicates, and sulfates—are promising candidates for safer, long-life rechargeable batteries, with growing importance for electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary energy storage applications. A well-known example is the LFP cathode used in Li-ion batteries. However, achieving high performance under practical conditions—such as high electrode loadings, fast charging, wide temperature ranges, and extended lifetimes—still requires continued advances in materials design, processing, cell engineering, and manufacturing. These advances must be guided by a deeper understanding of degradation mechanisms. In addition, the intrinsically low electronic conductivity of many polyanion materials necessitates carbon coating or conductive composites, which introduce complex interfacial phenomena that must be carefully understood and controlled.Goal:This Research Topic aims to collect recent advances that improve the performance, safety, and practical implementation of polyanion-based anode and cathode materials, supported by robust characterization and, where possible, validation under device-relevant conditions.Scope and information for Authors:We welcome focused contributions on polyanion anode and cathode active materials for Li-ion and Na-ion rechargeable batteries, including:• Novel polyanion compositions and structure–property relationships• Doping strategies and control of electronic and crystallographic defects• Transport and kinetic improvements (rate capability, ionic/electronic conductivity, diffusion)• Interfacial phenomena and carbon coating: electrolyte compatibility and solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI)• Degradation mechanisms, aging behavior, and failure analysis• Advanced and operando characterization and modeling linked to electrochemical performance• Electrode engineering and practical testing (high loading, full cells, fast charge, temperature, safety)• Scalable synthesis, particle engineering, and carbon/coating strategies• DFT based desing and development studies Topic editors: Mehmet Kadri Aydinol, Irshad Mohammad Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81354/polyanion-active-materials-for-safe-and-sustainable-rechargeable-batteries
