Post-Transcriptional Regulation in the Nervous System

Neural cells depend on post-transcriptional regulatory networks to maintain their identity, respond to environmental cues, and coordinate cellular interactions across complex circuits. These mechanisms govern RNA stability, transport, localization, and translation, and they are essential not only for neuronal plasticity but also for glial function, metabolic homeostasis, and neuroimmune responses. Disruptions in post-transcriptional regulation are increasingly recognized as central drivers of neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and pathological responses to injury. This Research Topic invites contributions that investigate how post-transcriptional control operates across diverse nervous system cell types, highlighting both shared mechanisms and distinct regulatory demands. Areas of interest include RNA-binding proteins, RNA granules, compartment-specific translation in dendrites, axons, and glial processes, RNA modifications such as m6A, regulation by non-coding RNAs, and the molecular machinery underlying RNA trafficking through neural networks and glial arbors. This collection aims to create a cross-disciplinary resource that maps how post-transcriptional regulation shapes nervous system function at the cellular and circuit levels, while highlighting emerging therapeutic opportunities based on RNA regulatory pathways. We welcome submissions using molecular, biochemical, imaging, electrophysiological, sequencing-based, and computational approaches, as well as work using multicellular in vitro systems, genetic models, and human-derived tissues. Studies that illuminate how defective post-transcriptional regulation contributes to conditions such as ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, leukodystrophies, ataxias, neuroinflammatory disorders, or response to CNS injury are especially encouraged.
