Precision and Climate-Resilient Nutrition Management in Fruit Crops

Citrus and other perennial fruit crops face a dual challenge: increasingly erratic climate conditions that disrupt nutrient uptake and allocation, and the need for more precise, resource-efficient fertilization strategies to sustain yield and fruit quality. While nutrient management research has traditionally relied on empirical, soil-type-specific recommendations, recent advances in machine learning diagnostics, sensor-based fertigation, and nutrient balance modelling now offer the potential for more adaptive, orchard-specific nutrition strategies. This Research Topic brings together research on the mechanisms, diagnostics, and technologies driving climate-resilient and precision nutrition management in citrus and other perennial fruit systems. It welcomes studies spanning plant physiological responses to nutrient stress, novel diagnostic tools, and field-validated management interventions. The premier goal of precision and climate-resilient nutrition management warrants an integrated approach to diagnosing multiple nutrient constraints and managing them sustainably, with emphasis on yield quality. Such a holistic approach protects soil-plant health against nutrient mining and climate-related stressors, supporting long-term, sustainable quality production. While addressing these interconnected issues, morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular markers often overlap in symptom expression. We aim to achieve input-use efficiency, with inbuilt cost- and labor-effectiveness. Precision nutrition management, if successful in addressing these problems, is expected to have a strong priming effect on climate resilience — a core concept that researchers are still eagerly pursuing amid intensive research in this direction. We invite contributions addressing, but not limited to:- Climate change impacts on nutrient uptake, allocation, and imbalances in citrus and perennial fruit crops- Machine learning and data-driven tools for diagnosing soil and plant nutrient constraints- Sensor-based and precision fertigation strategies and their physiological/yield outcomes- Nutrient balance and use-efficiency studies (N, P, K, and micronutrients) across orchard systems and soil types- Rootstock–scion interactions in nutrient and water use efficiency- Microbial inoculants and biofertilizers (e.g., mycorrhizal fungi) for nutrient stress alleviation and uptake enhancement- Integration of molecular and physiological approaches to understanding nutrient-responsive fruit quality traits Topic editors: Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Gustavo Brunetto, Qiang-Sheng Wu, Vasileios Ziogas Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84354/precision-and-climate-resilient-nutrition-management-in-fruit-crops
