Precision Neuropathology: Translating Brain Disease Mechanisms into Clinical Practice

Neuropathology has evolved from a discipline centered on descriptive morphology into one that integrates molecular profiling, spatial biology, computational analysis, and clinical interpretation. This transformation allows tissue-based observations to inform disease classification, refine prognostic models, and guide therapeutic decisions. At the same time, the translation of mechanistic insights from experimental and diagnostic neuropathology into clinical practice remains uneven. Histological findings, molecular signatures, and spatial patterns of tissue alteration often reveal biologically meaningful subtypes and trajectories, yet their systematic incorporation into patient management strategies is still developing. This Research Topic seeks to gather contributions that demonstrate how neuropathology contributes not only to disease characterization, but also to prediction, stratification, and clinical decision-making. Emphasis is placed on studies that connect tissue-derived insights with diagnostic tools, prognostic frameworks, and translational applications. We welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:• Molecular signatures and tissue-based subtyping of neurological conditions• Spatial and cellular organization of pathological processes in the nervous system• Neuropathological biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment response• Integration of digital pathology, artificial intelligence, and quantitative histology• Correlations between neuropathology, imaging, and clinical phenotypes• Translational pathways from tissue findings to therapeutic strategies• Experimental and human tissue models informing clinical neuropathology• Methodological innovations improving reproducibility and interpretation in neuropathologyBy emphasizing the clinical interpretability of tissue-derived knowledge, this Research Topic aims to position neuropathology as a central discipline linking biological mechanisms to patient care. The collection will provide a platform for multidisciplinary contributions demonstrating how pathological insights support diagnosis, prognostic evaluation, and therapeutic decision-making.
