Precision Neuroscience: Bridging Lab Discoveries to Clinical Solutions for Neurodegenerative Disorders
Neurodegenerative disorders represent one of the greatest medical and societal challenges of our time. Despite remarkable advances in neuroscience, the translation of laboratory discoveries into effective clinical interventions remains slow and fragmented. The increasing availability of high-throughput technologies, advanced neuroimaging, digital biomarkers, artificial intelligence, and innovative experimental models is rapidly transforming our understanding of disease mechanisms and opening new opportunities for precision medicine approaches across the spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases.Recent years have witnessed major progress in identifying molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration, including protein misfolding and aggregation, neuroinflammation, synaptic dysfunction, mitochondrial impairment, altered RNA metabolism, vascular contributions, and gut-brain interactions. At the same time, novel biomarkers derived from cerebrospinal fluid, blood, neuroimaging, genetics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and digital health technologies are reshaping disease characterization and patient stratification. The concept of precision neuroscience seeks to integrate these diverse sources of information to better define disease heterogeneity, identify biologically meaningful subgroups, predict disease trajectories, and tailor therapeutic interventions. This Research Topic aims to provide a multidisciplinary platform for research that bridges basic neuroscience and clinical application in neurodegenerative disorders. We welcome contributions that advance the understanding of disease pathophysiology while fostering the development of personalized diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic strategies in nwurodegnerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and atypical parkinsonisms. We welcome original research articles, reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, perspectives, and methodological papers within the following areas of interest:• Biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment response, and patient stratification;• Multi-omics approaches and systems biology;• Neuroimaging and computational neuroscience;• Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications;• Digital biomarkers and remote monitoring technologies;• Mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroprotection;• Neuroinflammation, immune responses, and glial biology;• Genetics, epigenetics, and gene-targeted therapies;• Gut-brain axis and environmental determinants of neurodegeneration;• Precision clinical trials and innovative therapeutic strategies;• Translational studies linking preclinical findings to clinical outcomes.By bringing together researchers, clinicians, data scientists, and translational investigators, this collection aims to highlight emerging discoveries that can accelerate the transition from mechanistic understanding to meaningful clinical benefit in neurodegenerative diseases.
