Precision Nutrition and Exercise in Obesity: Nutraceuticals, Body Composition and Emerging Therapies
Obesity remains one of the most pressing public health challenges worldwide, contributing substantially to the burden of cardiometabolic diseases, reduced quality of life, and healthcare costs. While caloric restriction and physical activity remain fundamental to obesity management, increasing attention has turned to nutraceuticals and bioactive compounds, particularly dietary polyphenols, as complementary strategies that target adipose tissue biology, energy metabolism, and metabolic flexibility. Despite growing experimental and clinical evidence, important gaps remain regarding their mechanisms of action, optimal dosing, long-term efficacy, and, critically, how they interact with exercise interventions to shape body composition outcomes across different obesity phenotypes. At the same time, the growth of precision nutrition and advanced body composition phenotyping (DXA, BIA, CT, MRI) offers new opportunities to personalize and evaluate obesity interventions, but these tools remain insufficiently integrated into nutraceutical and exercise research. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how nutraceutical-based interventions, particularly dietary polyphenols, interact with exercise and precision nutrition strategies to improve body composition, metabolic health, and long-term weight management in obesity. We welcome molecular, translational, and clinical studies that combine nutraceutical and exercise-based approaches, use body composition phenotyping as an outcome or stratification tool, and explore emerging, personalized therapeutic strategies for obesity care. By bringing together experts in nutrition, exercise science, and metabolism, this Research Topic seeks to bridge basic and clinical research on precision, nutraceutical-supported obesity management, with the goal of generating evidence-based, individualized strategies for obesity prevention and long-term management. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, systematic reviews (PRISMA-compliant), meta-analyses, clinical trials, and perspective papers addressing:- Polyphenols and nutraceutical compounds as adjuncts to obesity management — mechanisms of action, adipose tissue signaling, and metabolic effects- Precision nutrition strategies integrating individual metabolic/phenotypic data to guide nutraceutical and dietary interventions in obesity- Combined nutraceutical and exercise interventions: synergistic effects on adiposity, metabolic flexibility, and cardiometabolic risk- Body composition phenotyping (DXA, BIA, CT, MRI) as an outcome and stratification tool in nutraceutical/exercise obesity trials - Sarcopenic obesity and muscle mass preservation through combined nutritional bioactive and exercise-based strategies- Dosing, bioavailability, and long-term efficacy of polyphenols/nutraceuticals in clinical obesity interventions- Emerging and personalized therapeutic strategies (novel biomarkers, digital monitoring of body composition/lifestyle) supporting precision obesity careSubmissions relying solely on secondary/public datasets (e.g., NHANES) or purely bibliometric analyses without independent experimental validation or novel mechanistic insight are outside the scope of this Research Topic, in line with the Obesity section’s editorial policy.
