Precision Rehabilitation in Non-Communicable Diseases - Vol. II

Building on the success of Novel Rehabilitation Approaches for Non-Communicable Diseases in the Era of Precision Medicine, we are pleased to launch Volume II.Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) constitute a major global health challenge, and are responsible for over 70% of all deaths worldwide. Many individuals living with these conditions experience long-term functional and progressive limitations that require sustained rehabilitation interventions to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life. However, conventional rehabilitation approaches often rely on standardised protocols that do not fully account for individual variability in clinical profiles, functional capacity, motivation, and environmental context.Recent advances in digital health technologies, wearable sensors, artificial intelligence, and data analytics have created new opportunities for developing precision rehabilitation strategies. By integrating multidimensional clinical, functional, behavioural, biochemical, and digital data, precision rehabilitation aims to tailor interventions to each person's specific needs, optimising outcomes and improving adherence to rehabilitation programs. The implementation of precision approaches in rehabilitation for NCDs remains limited and fragmented across clinical settings and disciplines. Rehabilitation interventions are frequently designed using generalised models that may not adequately address the complexity and heterogeneity of individuals living with chronic conditions. This gap underscores the need for research that integrates clinical, functional, behavioural, biochemical, and technological dimensions to support individualised rehabilitation pathways. The goal of this new volume is to advance the conceptual and practical development of precision rehabilitation in the context of non-communicable diseases. Specifically, it aims to explore how person-centred, data-informed, and technology-enabled approaches can enhance rehabilitation assessment, intervention planning, and long-term management.By bringing together interdisciplinary contributions from rehabilitation sciences, digital health, behavioural sciences, biomedical research, and clinical practice, this collection seeks to promote innovative strategies that improve functional outcomes, strengthen adherence to rehabilitation programs, and support sustainable functional recovery and long-term health trajectories for individuals living with NCDs.This Research Topic welcomes contributions that explore innovative approaches to precision rehabilitation for NCDs from clinical, technological, biochemical, and behavioural perspectives. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Personalised rehabilitation interventions based on individual biochemical, clinical and functional profiles• Use of digital health technologies, wearable devices, and remote monitoring in rehabilitation• AI and data analytics supporting rehabilitation decision-making• Behavioural and motivational determinants influencing rehabilitation adherence• Precision approaches in neurorehabilitation, cardiovascular rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation• Telerehabilitation and hybrid models of rehabilitation care• Integration of biological, environmental, and lifestyle determinants in rehabilitation planning• Rehabilitation for specific NCDs• Rehabilitation strategies to mitigate the functional and societal impact of NCDs on ageing populationsWe welcome original research, clinical trials, study protocols, case studies, reviews, mini-reviews, hypotheses, theory articles, and perspectives that advance our understanding and practices in rehabilitation for individuals living with NCDs through innovative and precision-oriented approaches.
