Present and Future of EMDR in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy – Volume IV

This Research Topic collection is the new fourth edition, following the past success of volume one, volume two and most recently, volume three. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) research within clinical psychology and therapeutic approaches has seen significant advances in recent years, demonstrating its effectiveness across a range of psychological disorders beyond its initial use for post-traumatic stress disorder. The field has shifted toward understanding EMDR as an integrative, theory-based psychotherapeutic approach founded on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model. Ongoing studies have broadened the evidence base for EMDR’s efficacy in treating complex trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, dissociation, and various comorbidities. Still, debate continues regarding optimal protocols, mechanisms of action, integration with other treatments, and accessibility, particularly for specific populations and in diverse clinical contexts. This Research Topic aims to consolidate and expand the current understanding of EMDR in clinical psychology, health psychology and psychotherapy settings. Contributions are encouraged that clarify its theoretical foundations, investigate its mechanisms and processes, and demonstrate its application across patient populations, diagnostic categories, and healthcare settings. Specific objectives include addressing questions about how EMDR achieves clinical change, which populations benefit most, how it can be efficiently integrated with other psychotherapies, and which contextual or procedural modifications optimize outcomes. The Research Topic also aims to encourage discussion on implementation, equity of access, clinician training, and new delivery methods such as digital tools, tech advancements and group protocols. This collection welcomes research contributions focused on both the applications as well as potential limitations of EMDR applications in clinical psychology, prioritizing innovations relevant to real-world settings while maintaining a focus on rigor, transparency, and clinical significance. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Mechanisms of action and process-outcome research• Transdiagnostic and comorbidity-focused applications of EMDR• EMDR application across the lifespan and different contexts• Implementation science, equity, and real-world effectiveness• Innovations in intervention delivery, such as intensive and digital EMDR approaches• EMDR use in different populations and high-stress environments, including frontline workers and communities facing humanitarian crises• Comparison of EMDR approach with various therapeutic modalitiesArticles may include original research articles from both experimental and non-experimental (observational) study designs, neurobiological evidence and neuroimaging-based studies, conceptual papers addressing issues concerning the AIP model, review articles focusing on EMDR in the clinical field, clinical trials, clinical case studies and reports, as well as perspective articles and qualitative studies.
