Probing Stellar Interiors with Asteroseismology: Advances from Space-based Observations

Asteroseismology has revolutionized our ability to probe stellar interiors, particularly in evolved stars, through high-precision photometric observations from space missions such as Kepler and TESS. These space-based data observations have provided unprecedented insights into stellar structure, internal rotation, core properties, and evolutionary states across different phases of stellar evolution.Recent advances enabled by the analyses of solar-like oscillations and mixed modes have opened powerful diagnostics of the deep interiors of red giants and subgiants, including those on the red giant branch and in the red clump. These tools allow detailed probing of core structure, internal stratification, and angular momentum transport. In parallel, the combination of asteroseismic observations with complementary datasets, including spectroscopy from ground-based surveys and astrometry from the Gaia mission, has significantly improved the precision of fundamental stellar parameters such as mass, radius, and age. This Research Topic aims to bring together observational, theoretical, and computational studies focused on the asteroseismology of evolved stars, particularly leveraging advances from space-based observations. We encourage contributions that exploit solar-like oscillations and mixed modes, as well as studies connecting asteroseismology with stellar rotation, magnetic activity, and angular momentum evolution. We also welcome studies that integrate data from Kepler, TESS, and future missions such as PLATO, Roman and Earth 2.0 (ET), as well as works combining asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric observations. Broader topics such as stellar populations, stellar ages, and galactic archaeology are also within scope. We invite submissions of original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, perspectives, and methodological studies that advance our understanding of stellar interiors through asteroseismology. Suggested themes include: • Internal rotation and angular momentum transport in evolved stars• Mixed-mode oscillations and diagnostics of stellar cores• Synergies between asteroseismology, spectroscopy, and Gaia astrometry• Characterization of asteroseismic samples• Constraints on stellar masses, ages, and evolutionary states• Magnetic fields, stellar activity, and their asteroseismic signatures• Comparative studies using Kepler, TESS, and future missions (e.g., PLATO)• Preparatory asteroseismic studies for PLATO• Applications to stellar populations and galactic archaeology• Next-generation modeling and simulations on asteroseismology (e.g., simulated light curves or MHD simulations).
