Processing–Structure–Property Relationships in Multiphase Polymeric Materials
Multiphase polymeric materials, including polymer blends, composites, nanocomposites, and hybrid systems, exhibit complex structural features that strongly influence their physical, mechanical, thermal, transport, and functional properties. The central scientific challenge is to understand the interplay between phase behavior, interfacial phenomena, morphology, processing, and the resulting material properties. In polymer blends, miscibility, phase separation, phase stability, and interfacial compatibility govern the development of phase morphology and, consequently, material performance. In polymer composites and nanocomposites, polymer–filler interactions, filler dispersion, and interfacial structure play critical roles in determining structure–property relationships. Advances in processing, characterization, modeling, and simulation are providing new opportunities to understand and control multiphase structures across different length and time scales.Multiphase polymeric materials are also increasingly being developed for functional and sustainable applications. Electrochemical and energy-related systems, including polymer electrolytes, conductive and dielectric nanocomposites, and materials for energy storage, require an understanding of the coupling between morphology, interfaces, transport phenomena, and functional properties. At the same time, the growing demand for sustainable materials has stimulated research on recyclable and reprocessable polymer systems, circular polymer materials, bio-based polymers, and biodegradable polymer blends and composites. In these systems, phase compatibility, morphology control, interfacial interactions, and processing history can be critical for achieving the desired combination of performance, durability, and recyclability. This Research Topic aims to bring together recent advances in the fundamental understanding, processing, characterization, modeling, and application of multiphase polymeric materials, with particular emphasis on phase behavior, morphology, interfacial phenomena, and structure–property relationships. Contributions that establish clear links between composition, processing, phase morphology, interfacial characteristics, and resulting properties are particularly encouraged. Experimental, theoretical, and computational studies, as well as integrated approaches combining these methods, are welcome. We welcome manuscripts on the following themes:• Phase behavior, miscibility, and morphology in polymer blends, including phase separation, phase stability, morphology development, and compatibilization; • Interfacial phenomena and morphology control in multiphase polymeric systems, including polymer–polymer and polymer–filler interactions, surface modification, and interfacial engineering; • Polymer composites and nanocomposites, with emphasis on physical, mechanical, thermal, transport, and other structure-dependent properties; • Processing–structure–property relationships, including advanced and reactive processing approaches for controlling phase morphology and material performance; • Modeling and simulation of multiphase polymeric systems, including theoretical and computational approaches to phase behavior, morphology evolution, interfacial phenomena, and structure–property relationships; • Functional and electrochemical multiphase polymeric materials for energy-storage applications;• Sustainable multiphase polymeric materials, including recycling and reprocessing, compatibilization of recycled polymers, circular economy strategies, bio-based and biodegradable polymer systems, and design for recyclability Topic editors: Hamed Peidayesh, Randa E.Khalifa Ghonim, Esmail Sharifzadeh Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82007/processing-structure-property-relationships-in-multiphase-polymeric-materials
