Production And Breeding Of Ornamental Plants: Technical And Applied Research

The field of ornamental plant production and breeding encompasses a diverse array of plants, including bedding and pot plants, cut flowers, and landscape trees and shrubs. The ornamental plant industry is experiencing significant growth due to the continuous demand for new and innovative flowers. While modern breeding approaches have made substantial advancements, there remains a notable gap in the innovation of practical aspects of production aimed at achieving higher quality and productivity. Additionally, despite the intense commercial competition, the economic aspects of production and the need to reduce costs are often underrepresented in scientific literature. Addressing these gaps is crucial for the sustainable development of the ornamental plant industry. This Research Topic aims to explore and promote innovation in the technical aspects of ornamental plant production, including propagation and cultivation strategies, classical breeding, the development of new cultivars, and the domestication of potential wild species. By continuing to appraise modern breeding strategies, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and economic challenges faced by the industry. The goal is to foster applied and innovative research that can lead to the improvement of the quality and productivity of ornamental plants, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers. To gather further insights into the production and breeding of ornamental plants, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Innovative propagation techniques- Advanced cultivation strategies- Classical breeding methods- Development of new cultivars- Domestication of wild species- Economic analysis of production costs- Quality improvement measures- Sustainable production practices- Impact of environmental factors on production- Integration of technology in ornamental plant production Topic editors: Pejman Azadi, Stefania Toscano, Leila Samiei Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/58431/production-and-breeding-of-ornamental-plants-technical-and-applied-research
