Psychodermatology: Understanding the Brain–Skin Connection in Health and Disease

Psychodermatology is an emerging interdisciplinary field that investigates the dynamic relationship between mental health and skin disease. The skin and nervous system share a common embryologic origin and remain closely connected through complex neuroendocrine and immune pathways, often referred to as the brain–skin axis. Psychological stress, anxiety, and depression can trigger or exacerbate dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, acne, urticaria, and alopecia areata by activating stress hormones and inflammatory mediators. Conversely, chronic skin diseases can significantly affect emotional well-being, leading to reduced self-esteem, social withdrawal, anxiety, and depression due to their visible nature and impact on quality of life.Recent advances in psychoneuroimmunology have highlighted the role of shared inflammatory pathways in both psychiatric and dermatologic disorders, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to patient care. By integrating dermatologic treatment with psychological assessment and support, psychodermatology aims to improve both skin outcomes and mental health, recognizing that optimal health extends beyond physical symptoms to encompass emotional and psychological well-being.We invite researchers, clinicians, educators, and interdisciplinary scholars to submit original manuscripts for this collection. Authors are invited to submit original research, reviews, novelty case studies, and commentaries addressing:• Psychological aspects of skin disease• Mental health outcomes in dermatology patients• Stress-related skin disorders• Psychoneuroimmunology• Quality of life and patient-centered care• Behavioral and psychosocial interventions• Multidisciplinary and integrated care modelsThis Research Topic aims to promote innovative research and clinical insights that improve understanding of the bidirectional relationship between psychological well-being and skin health.
