Psychophysiological and Biomechanical Determinants of Sports Performance

Understanding sports performance requires an integrated perspective that captures the complex interplay between physiological, psychological, and biomechanical factors. Traditional approaches have often examined these domains in isolation; however, emerging evidence highlights the importance of multidimensional frameworks to better explain performance, fatigue, adaptation, and injury risk across different populations and sporting contexts. This Research Topic aims to advance current knowledge by bringing together cutting-edge research on the psychophysiological and biomechanical determinants of sports performance. We seek contributions that explore how internal (e.g., neuromuscular, metabolic, cognitive, and emotional) and external (e.g., mechanical load, environmental conditions, and technological interventions) factors interact to influence athletic performance, recovery, and long-term development.A particular focus will be placed on integrative and interdisciplinary approaches, including the use of wearable technologies, motion analysis systems, computational modeling, and data-driven methods to assess performance in real-world and laboratory settings. Studies examining acute and chronic responses to training, fatigue mechanisms, motor control, decision-making processes, and perceptual-cognitive demands are especially encouraged. This Research Topic welcomes original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and methodological papers addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:- Neuromuscular and biomechanical determinants of movement efficiency and performance- Psychophysiological responses to training load, fatigue, and recovery- Interaction between cognitive function, perception, and motor execution- Injury prevention and rehabilitation from a biomechanical and physiological perspective- The role of wearable technologies and digital tools in monitoring performance- Performance optimization in elite, youth, aging, and clinical populations- Multiscale and modeling approaches (e.g., machine learning, computational biomechanics)By fostering a holistic understanding of performance, this Research Topic aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, supporting coaches, practitioners, and researchers in developing more effective, evidence-based strategies for training, performance enhancement, and athlete health.Ultimately, this collection seeks to contribute to a more comprehensive and integrative paradigm in sports science, where performance is understood as the result of dynamic interactions between body, mind, and environment.
