Psychophysiology and Mental Performance in Basketball: Applications of Wearable and Flexible Sensor Technologies
Basketball is a dynamic and cognitively demanding sport in which performance depends not only on physical ability, but also on attention, perception, decision-making, self-regulation, emotional control, and psychological readiness. In recent years, wearable and flexible sensor technologies have opened new possibilities for capturing real-time data on athletes’ movement, workload, physiological responses, fatigue, and recovery. Beyond physical monitoring, these technologies also offer valuable opportunities to better understand the psychological processes that shape performance, wellbeing, and health in basketball contexts. This Research Topic aims to bring together interdisciplinary research on how wearable and flexible sensing technologies can be applied to the study of psychological and behavioral factors in basketball. We welcome contributions that examine how sensor-based approaches may help assess or predict cognitive performance, attentional focus, stress responses, emotional states, perceived exertion, readiness, recovery, and other mental or psychophysiological factors relevant to basketball training and competition. We are particularly interested in work that connects technological innovation with sport psychology, performance science, behavioral regulation, and athlete wellbeing.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:- wearable and flexible sensors for monitoring psychological and psychophysiological states in basketball- sensor-based assessment of stress, arousal, attentional focus, and emotional regulation- cognitive and behavioral aspects of fatigue, recovery, and competition readiness- links between physiological signals and decision-making, perception, or performance consistency- use of wearable technologies to support self-regulation, mental skills training, and athlete wellbeing- psychophysiological monitoring in training, competition, rehabilitation, and return-to-play contexts- integration of sensor data with behavioral measures, self-report, or performance outcomes- AI- or data-driven approaches for understanding athlete adaptation, performance, and health in basketball populationsBy integrating perspectives from sport psychology, psychophysiology, movement science, biomechanics, and applied performance research, this collection seeks to advance the use of smart sensing technologies to better understand and support both performance and mental wellbeing in basketball.
