Psychosexual Disorders: Awareness, Attitudes, Comorbidity, and Care Across Populations

Psychosexual disorders represent a heterogeneous group of conditions underpinned by psychological, social, and biological determinants. These disorders frequently remain underrecognized due to factors such as the pervasive stigma surrounding sexual health, sociocultural norms, limited accessibility of specialized sexual health services, inadequate awareness of therapeutic options, and prevailing negative attitudes toward sexuality. The manifestations of psychosexual disorders vary considerably across countries, communities, and social strata. Furthermore, numerous medical and psychiatric conditions, as well as their pharmacological treatments, may influence psychosexual health, either directly or through secondary mechanisms. Psychosexual issues can also arise within non-clinical populations, including individuals going through puberty, those with diverse sexual orientations, and individuals whose beliefs and behaviors are shaped by cultural influences.Despite sexual health being an integral component of both physical and mental well-being, it often remains unacknowledged and, consequently, untreated. Similarly, there is a relative paucity of research on psychosexual disorders in the available literature. This Research Topic aims to contribute to the evidence base and enhance understanding of psychosexual disorders and related issues. Given that individuals with isolated psychosexual concerns frequently do not present to clinical settings due to stigma and lack of awareness, emphasis will be placed on research aimed at identifying and screening psychosexual issues across diverse non-clinical, subclinical, and clinical populations. Research on knowledge and attitudes toward psychosexual disorders in general, vulnerable, and high-risk populations; the comorbidity of sexual dysfunctions with other mental and physical health concerns; and the sexual health side effects of various medications for mental and physical conditions will constitute the primary focus of this section. The Research Topic seeks to explore a wide range of themes related to psychosexual disorders and issues, with particular emphasis on their intersections with other health and cultural domains. Contributors are invited to address, but are not limited to, the following areas:• the comorbidity of psychosexual disorders and issues with mental health and/or physical health conditions• psychosexual disorders and issues associated with the treatment of mental or physical health conditions• psychosexual disorders and issues across different age groups, and among vulnerable or high-risk populations (e.g., individuals with substance use disorders)• awareness of and attitudes towards psychosexual disorders and issues across populations and subgroups• the influence of sociocultural norms on stigma, recognition, and treatment of psychosexual disorders.
