Quality of Life in Later Life in Asian Countries and Regions: Social, Economic and Digital Dimensions in Context

Population aging is accelerating across many Asian countries and regions, accompanied by rapid economic transformation, urbanization, and digitalization. These changes are reshaping the determinants of quality of life (QoL) in later life, including financial security, access to health and social services, social participation, and digital engagement. While global research has advanced conceptual and measurement approaches to QoL among older adults, evidence from Asian contexts remains uneven and fragmented. Cultural norms, family structures, labor market transitions and digital infrastructure vary widely across the region and may influence how older adults experience aging and well-being. Moreover, disparities related to gender, socioeconomic status, rural - urban residence and digital literacy are becoming increasingly important determinants of later-life outcomes. A focused Research Topic is needed to synthesize current knowledge and generate context-sensitive evidence to inform public health, social policy and aging - related interventions in Asia. This Research Topic aims to advance interdisciplinary understanding of quality of life in later life across Asian countries and regions by examining the interplay between socioeconomic conditions, public health systems and digital transformation. We seek to address several key challenges: limited comparative evidence across Asian settings, insufficient integration of digital determinants of well-being and the need for policy-relevant research that reflects demographic and socioeconomic diversity. The goal is to bring together empirical studies, comparative analyses and conceptual contributions that examine how social, economic and technological factors shape well - being among older adults. Particular attention will be given to emerging issues such as digital financial inclusion, digital health technologies, social protection systems, and labor market participation in older age. By integrating perspectives from public health, gerontology, economics and social sciences, this Research Topic intends to identify evidence-based pathways that can support healthy and equitable aging. Ultimately, the collection will contribute to informing public policy, designing interventions and improving measurement frameworks for assessing quality of life in later life within rapidly changing Asian societies. This Research Topic welcomes contributions that examine determinants, measurement and policy implications of quality of life among older adults in Asian countries and regions. Submissions may focus on cross-national comparisons, country-specific analyses or regional perspectives addressing diverse socioeconomic and digital contexts.Suggested themes include, but are not limited to:- Socioeconomic inequalities and financial security in later life.- Digital literacy, digital inclusion and digital financial capability among older adults.- Access to healthcare, long-term care systems and digital health technologies.- Social participation, community engagement and intergenerational relations.-Measurement and validation of QoL instruments in Asian populations.- Public policy, social protection and aging workforce dynamics.- Rural - urban disparities in aging outcomes. We welcome Original Research Articles, Systematic Reviews, Scoping Reviews, Policy Analyses, Brief Research Reports, and Perspectives that contribute theoretical, methodological, or empirical insights into aging and quality of life in Asia.
