Quantum theory, biological organization, and the mind-brain problem

The relationship between physical theory and biological organization remains one of the most challenging in contemporary science. Part of the inspiration of this topic comes from the intellectual legacy of Erwin Schrödinger, especially the questions raised in What is Life? and Mind and Matter, as well as from the centenary of wave mechanics. Schrödinger’s reflections helped shape enduring discussions on order, information, stability, and the organization of living matter. Today, these themes continue to resonate in debates on biological information, neural complexity, memory, brain dynamics, and the conceptual relation between mind and brain. Rather than treating these questions as purely historical, this Research Topic approaches them as still-active problems at the intersection of theoretical physics, life sciences, and neuroscience. This Research Topic aims to explore whether and how concepts rooted in quantum theory may contribute to current thinking on biological organization, neural processes, memory, and the mind-brain problem. The goal is to create a rigorous interdisciplinary forum in which foundational physical ideas, questions about organized living matter, and contemporary neuroscientific problems can be examined in relation to one another. In this spirit, the Topic seeks to clarify what quantum-theoretical concepts may genuinely offer to the study of living systems and brain function, and where their relevance remains conceptual, heuristic, or open to debate. By bringing together contributions from physics, biology, neuroscience, and philosophy of mind, this collection aims to foster a more precise dialogue on the relation between matter, organization, and the brain-mind construct. We welcome theoretical, conceptual, and interdisciplinary contributions addressing the relationship between quantum theory, biological organization, and the mind-brain problem. Relevant themes include quantum-theoretical perspectives on living systems; order, information, and stability in biological matter; the emergence and persistence of memory-related organization in living systems; possible links between organized biological systems and neural dynamics; and contemporary approaches to the relation between mind, brain, and matter. We are particularly interested in manuscripts that combine conceptual clarity with scientific discipline, including hypothesis and theory papers, focused reviews, perspective articles, and analytically grounded interdisciplinary contributions. Historical contributions are welcome only insofar as they illuminate current scientific questions and ongoing lines of research in neuroscience and related fields.
